Nervous System Dysregulation: Signs You’re Stuck in Fight-or-Flight (and How to Reset)
If you’ve ever thought…
“I’m doing all the right things… so why do I still feel off?”
This is usually where I start looking at the nervous system.
Because the truth is, you can be eating well, taking the right supplements, even doing the inner work… and still feel wired, exhausted, anxious, or disconnected.
And often, it’s not because you’re doing anything wrong.
It’s because your system doesn’t feel safe enough to receive the benefits of what you’re doing.
This is something I also see often when working with clients on hormone imbalances and gut health issues, where the underlying driver isn’t just physiological
What Is Nervous System Dysregulation?
At its core, nervous system dysregulation is when your body gets stuck in a stress response state.
Most people know this as “fight or flight,” but it can also show up as:
freeze
shutdown
chronic low-level activation
This isn’t just mental or emotional. It’s physiological.
Your body is constantly scanning for safety. And when it doesn’t find it, it prioritizes survival over everything else:
digestion slows
hormones shift
sleep becomes disrupted
inflammation increases
From a functional medicine lens, this is where I start connecting dots.
From a more intuitive lens, this is where I often see someone’s energy feel contracted, guarded, or overextended.
Signs You Might Be Stuck in Fight-or-Flight
This doesn’t always look like anxiety.
In fact, many of the people I work with are high-functioning, successful, and holding it all together.
But underneath, there’s a different story.
You might notice:
Feeling tired but wired
Trouble falling asleep or waking between 2–4am
Easily overstimulated or overwhelmed
Digestive issues or sensitivity
Doing all the “right” health things without results
Feeling disconnected from your body or others
Difficulty slowing down
Crashing when you finally stop
Or more subtly:
You can’t access the same sense of expansion or presence you used to
Things that used to feel grounding don’t land the same way
This is often the body asking for a different level of support.
Why This Matters More Than You Think
If your nervous system is dysregulated, it will impact:
Hormones
Gut health
Immune function
Metabolism
Emotional regulation
Your ability to heal
This is why lab work only tells part of the story.
You can optimize numbers all day long, but if your system is still in protection mode, your body won’t fully shift.
Healing requires safety.
Not just logically. But biologically.
How to Reset Your Nervous System
This is where a lot of advice misses the mark.
It’s not about adding more.
It’s about finding what your system can actually receive.
1. Regulation Before Optimization
Before focusing on hormones, gut health, or weight, we create a baseline of safety.
This might look like:
simplifying routines
reducing overwhelm
creating more predictability in your day
Sometimes less is what allows the system to finally exhale.
2. Somatic Work (Not Just Mindset Work)
You can understand everything mentally and still feel stuck.
The nervous system responds to sensation.
Try:
breathwork
body awareness
gentle movement
grounding practices
Even small moments of being in your body can begin to shift things.
3. Support the Physiology
If your body is depleted, inflamed, or undernourished, regulation becomes harder.
This may include:
stabilizing blood sugar
supporting gut health
addressing deficiencies
targeted supplementation
This isn’t about doing everything. It’s about doing what’s aligned for you.
4. Safe, Supported Expansion
Sometimes deeper work is what unlocks regulation.
This can include:
trauma-informed care
integration after plant medicine
guided therapeutic experiences
altered states of consciousness work
But only when it’s done in a way that feels safe and attuned.
The Part That Often Gets Missed
Sometimes what feels like something is wrong…
Is actually your system evolving.
Outgrowing patterns. Reorganizing. Asking for a different level of care.
The tools that used to work may not land the same way anymore.
Your system is asking for something more precise. More supportive.
Where to Start
If this resonates, keep it simple:
Notice when your body feels even slightly more at ease
Reduce what feels overstimulating
Choose one practice that brings you into your body
Get support if you feel stuck
You don’t have to force healing.
Your body already knows how to move toward it.
Work With Me
If you’re feeling like you’ve tried everything and something still isn’t clicking, there’s usually a reason.
This is a core part of my work, blending:
functional medicine
nervous system regulation
deeper integration work
So we’re not just managing symptoms, but actually shifting the system underneath them.
